In recent years the semi-rigid have multiplied. We see them in each port, the technology is up to date and the design is ready. Fishing friends, diving equipment, fans of water sports, a family outing… A romantic cruise? These units surprise and seduce, which one to choose? How to decide?
Imagine a puzzle. Each piece depends on the other to form a whole. In general, choosing a boat such as a semi-rigid is a bit like doing a puzzle. Each point (engine power, utility, available mooring…) must be considered together. We propose a series of five questions to guide you towards the correct model.

Your goal. What do you like?
The first question that you should ask yourself is to define what your objective is, what you like. In fact, your choice of semi-rigid will depend on the utility: a fisherman needs to be able to install his equipment, a diver needs space to prepare, a passionate wakeboarding, water skiing, etc. adequate engine power. Otherwise, if you want to sunbathe with family or friends, and even go out for a few days, some units offer a cabin with a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom.
Note: fuel capacity
We often talk about engine and horsepower, but what is the fuel capacity? The needs will not be the same depending on whether you plan to go out during the day in the nearby coves or if you are planning a cruise.
The place. Where will you navigate?
Another point to consider is where you will navigate. Are you planning to start your engines in the Mediterranean Sea? Or rather in calm waters, in a lake? Depending on the location, one helmet or another will suit more. A V-shaped hull will guarantee you to break the wave well; on the contrary, when facing calm waters, a flat hull is sufficient.
Note: the material
When buying a new rigid, you don't choose the material in the same way that you choose a finish or electronic equipment, but it is useful to know what material your tires are made of. Basically, there are three types of materials: PVC, economical and sensitive to the sun; hypalon, very resistant and flexible, more difficult to work with; and polyurethane, a novelty in the sector, resistant, easy to work with and above all recyclable. Today, the most popular materials are PVC, the most widely used, and polyurethane. What is the difference? Although there are specific glues for each of these two materials, PVC tires are more difficult to repair. In any case, be careful, the glue has a limited life.
The guests. How many seats on board?
The size of the rigid will vary depending on the number of people on board expected. In general, RIBs have very good capacity. You can check the number of seats on board in the technical sheet.
Note: storage
We talked about it in the introduction, and it is well known at sea: the profitability of the space must be at the maximum. Do not hesitate to look at where a refrigerator, a closet, a net is hidden ... And thus evaluate if there will be enough storage space for your use. Remember, you will need a place to store your underwater scooter 😉
The motor. Acceleration or good cruising speed?
Inboard or outboard? Diesel, gasoline ... Or electric? Again, there are many possibilities. A first approach might be to find out from the manufacturer which engine is recommended for which model. Then, there are several points to take into account: the use, the size of the hull, the capacity of the unit ... In all cases, make sure that the rigid will assume the power of the engine and that your insurance will also follow you.
Note: the propeller
The smaller the propeller, the more you will gain in top speed and lose in acceleration. On the contrary, the bigger it is, the more grip and softer peaks. What is the correct commitment? A 4-blade propeller is still a very good choice, as it guarantees good acceleration and maximum speed.
Mooring and wintering. How to take care of it?
Everything is a question of balance;) Some RIBs remain moored during the season and sleep dry in winter, others always remain outdoors. In all cases, this represents an annual cost (towing, mooring, storage, etc.) to take into account when making the decision. The most important thing is to know how to take care of it according to the situation. For a dry wintering, it is advisable to store the semi-rigid inflated to the point, that is, molded and in a dry place and away from light.
Note: the antifouling
Does the unit sleep dry? Evaluate the pros and cons, in this house antifouling is not necessary. Just make sure to rinse it well with fresh water after every outing.
Obviously, the available budget defines many other points: the equipment, for example, the quality of materials and finishes ... Shall we talk about it? Contact us by click here, by email info@privilege-yacht.com or by phone at +34 972 45 36 22.
