You sail with a semi-rigid, you have to clean the tires and you don't know where to start. The first question is: Do you have the right product? Cleaning the floats with too strong a product can cause irreparable damage, such as deterioration of the permeability or even make them sticky. On the other hand, you will never end up wearing a misfit one. Then, it will depend on the stage in which we are - in the rinse after going out to sea or in the annual cleaning - and also on the use. In fact, a fisherman will spend more time most of the time than an individual.
Clean without sweating
We talk about good gestures and reflexes to avoid great works.
Daily tire cleaning
After each trip to the sea, it is recommended to clean the floats with fresh water. This is the basis of good maintenance. This is also the time to check for wear-related scratches or bumps. Thus, by regularly inspecting the condition of the tires, you will be able to intervene from the beginning of a possible take-off or even a mold. Finally, every three or four outings, it is recommended to use a detergent. There is a fairly wide offer, but in all cases, a mild detergent is sufficient and recommended.
Annual tire cleaning
General inspection! And also rigorous.
Time to restore floats, run fabric over heavy dirt, treat mold, and revive the overall look.
For each need, one product or another will be better adapted. Follow the instructions precisely.
The 5 things you should not do
- Try a new product and apply it immediately, without testing it on a small area
- Using an acetone-type solvent that could damage the fabric
- Clean with a detergent in the sun. UV rays fix the prints!
- For the same reason as explained above, partially rinse ...
- Using a sponge with a scraper
A few extras
For a look like new
Feel free to use a universal cleaning paste, such as Permanon PS *. Depending on your needs, you can use it every three or four trips during the daily cleaning or during the annual renewal.
* We are the official distributor of Permanon products in Catalonia. We will give you some tips for these specific products very soon!
For a bright touch
After the big cleaning, it is advisable to apply a protective wax. First of all, it will give the tires a shiny look; then, when applying a hydrophobic wax, water and dirt will slide off without being able to adhere.
A single cleaning product for all surfaces, proven results? Yes, we are talking about the white clay stone! Cleans, degreases, polishes and protects. Besides being environmentally friendly, it requires very little water and can even be used with seawater. Another positive point? It can be applied to all types of coating for universal use: from difficult tasks on gelcoat (black marks, grease or paint stains) to those unavoidable on stainless steel: rust spots, oxidation, small scratches ... White clay obviously also applies to plexiglass, glass, pvc and hypalon (the two main materials of a semi-rigid tire). Even fishermen adopt it to clean cuttlefish ink, encrusted algae and traces of dried blood. Of course, wintering can avoid some surprises when preparing your RIB for the season. We will talk about it in one of our next articles. Stay connected 😉
